Fomhóire

Fomhóire
pronounced 'foh-VOy-ra'

The Fomhóire
Fomhóire means 'from the sea' and is the name given to the divine powers, or gods of night, death and cold. The Fomhóire were misshapen and were believed to have the heads of goats and bulls. They also were believed to have only one leg and one arm each, and these grew out of the middle of their chests.
The Fomhóire were the ancestors of the evil faeries and, according to one Gaelic writer, of all misshapen persons. The giants and leprechauns are also said to belong to the Fomhóire.

yes , the fomhoire (said foh-VOy-ra) are otherwordly phantoms of dark and cold inclinations - the meaning and translation is not secure it means roughly from under, or out of the sea or depths . they are a very old race and one of the legendary occupents of ireland - they fought with the Partholonians, and after that the Nemedians before the invasion and battle with the Tuatha Dé Danann who brought the magic weapons to ireland before defeat by the Milesians who took the i suppose mortal relm banishing the Tuatha Dé Danann to the otherworld relms ,

the fomhoire are ancient , and i like the misshapen reputatuion they hold they are ad dangerious as the dark receses of human mind and should be avoided thus,
its lovely to say and has meaning to be and the word is beautiful to look at i am falling in love with it for a label name

"Don't be afraid that your life will end, Be afraid that it will never begin."
Lugh, the bright star of Tuatha De Danann, was the son of one of the Fomhoire women and a Tuatha De Danann father. He was considered one of the most beautiful of that godlike race (the Tuatha De Danann, that is) and was considered a Sun God.

yes, but what do we think of it for a lasble name?

Through reading some of your past journals, replies and through some of our past conversations I can understand why it has attraction for you. If you feel strongly about it and feel that it expresses what you want express then by all means you should use it.

I believe that we should embrace everything that is us, light and dark alike, for we are all made up of both and shun one or the other at our expense.

As for the possibility of saying the name wrong, look at mine. Few people are going to pronounce my label correctly (Mer-thun). I have to admit that this is the first time I have seen this spelling, Fomhóire and heard the pronunciation of 'foh-VOy-ra'. In all the material that I have read they have always spelled it Fomor or Fomorians and said it the same way. Not that I'm questioning you, I like the spelling of Fomhóire and knowing what I do of Gaelic have no doubt that it is pronounced as you say (the discrepency, by the way didn't come from the Irish but from the early Christian missionaries that came up with the written language for Gaelic). But when it comes down to it, it doesn't matter if some people are going to mispronounce it or not. Those that it is important enough to them will ask how to say it.

you have a good point - foy-voy-ra is how you pronounce the gealic 'Fomhóire', but like many of their words there are multipul names and ways of saying them example the morrian (which is how it is said ), in gaelic is spelt Morrighan, there are variatios such a s morrigu, all depicting the ancient tripple entity of war frenzy and death ,
i have heard them called the fomorie also , and i figuer with the correct gaelic spelling many will prounounce it thus , those who know the peoples will know them as Fomhóire, and call them fohvoyra
i do like the look and accuracy of Fomhóire ,

I can see you as the Morrighan.
